Biography

Linda Kurtz Kingsley in her Studio

Linda graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art with a BFA in Illustration and an MA in Art Education. Her first job as art teacher at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf introduced her to the hearing impaired and that became a life long interest. Continuing her studies at Smith College, Gallaudet University, San Jose State University, Pennsylvania State University, Community College of Philadelphia, and Chapman University, she became an academic teacher of the deaf, Communication Handicapped Specialist, and Resource Specialist.

Linda taught university level courses in Art Education and community college classes in American Sign Language and English as a Second Language, as well as art classes on all levels. She taught special education classes at the middle and high school levels, served as a college/conference interpreter in American Sign Language, and now retired is a free-lance author/illustrator.

Published books include: Blue Skies for Lupe, Woodbine House, 2015, which made number one for children’s books on immigration on Amazon that year. Bringing Up Sophie, 2010, and Signs of Jays, 2008, were published with Jason & Nordic Publishers. These two books are used as core curriculum in several state teachers’ programs. Teaching Art to the Deaf, Gordon Press Publishers, an academic book, was published much earlier. Currently, Linda is working on two young adult novels and a story book.

Linda resides close to the sea in Monterey, CA with her husband. She has two grown children, an artist son and a teacher daughter, two grandchildren, and a grand dog. Linda’s teaching experiences with special needs students have been the inspiration for her books.
